Within the Department of Biomedical Engineering, the Biomedical NMR group is involved in teaching activities at both the bachelor (BSc) and master (MSc) level.

Courses

A wide variety of courses is offered, both compulsory and optional, which are related to biomedical imaging in general and MRI and MRS techniques in particular. The courses cover the basic principles of the techniques, the procedures for signal acquisition and analysis, as well as the major applications in biological, biomedical and clinical studies.

OGO (Design Centered Learning) in the BSc-program

In OGO (the Dutch equivalent of Design Centered Learning) a challenging biomedical topic is studied in groups of 6 to 8 BME students. The Biomedical NMR group organizes one compulsory project, entitled “Molecular spies unmasked with MRI”.

MSc-projects

During the MSc-phase, three different individual projects are done. The first (the so-called internal project) is an internship of 3 months (circa 50 % of the time, since it usually is combined with elective courses) at TU/e, within the department. The Biomedical NMR group offers stimulating subjects for internal projects that are directly linked to ongoing research.

The second individual project is a full-time externship of 3 months that is preferably carried out abroad in a foreign academic institution. The Biomedical NMR group has an extensive worldwide network and therefore can assist students with finding places for externships where the science is excellent and high-quality supervision guaranteed. The group can also aid in getting funding to partially cover the (extra) costs of the externship.

The MSc-phase is concluded with a 9 months project. As for the above projects, the student has the option to choose from a range of subjects, according to his/her prime interests and future ambitions. The MSc-student will work in a team that tackles a specific problem and the daily supervision in most cases is shared between PhD-students and staff members. Regular meetings are held to discuss progress and future directions. Students typically give three presentations for the group during the project. Depending on the subject that the student works on, he or she will also take part in two-weekly subgroup meetings in which ongoing research and topics of mutual interest are discussed.

For information on the above projects contact prof Klaas Nicolay.

Group meetings

The BioMedical NMR group organizes weekly seminars during which students and staff members present the plans and progress of their research. This is a very important event in the training of students to become independent and critical scientists that show imagination and creativity for solving challenging biomedical problems.
