By combining state-of-the-art research with academic education, the Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) aspires to significantly contribute to the further development of the Biomedical Engineering discipline.

Research groups from TU/e (Eindhoven) and UM (Maastricht) share research and computational facilities at both universities. The collaborative use of facilities has resulted in an increasing number of joint research programs. As such, biomedical engineering research is connected to various national research schools. Researchers who extensively collaborate with BME receive part-time appointments at the department to ensure that research in biomedical engineering remains firmly linked to the original disciplines. Through the appointment of part-time professors a link is established with industrial research.
